One of the biggest threats to water resources is eutrophication – the explosive growth of algae resulting in oxygen depletion, fish death and, ultimately, river death. This is due to the presence of nutrients (nitrogen and phosphorus) in lakes and rivers, much of which comes from agricultural fertilisers but there is still a significant contribution from sewage treatment works final effluents.
